Those Evil Humans
I often see posts by people on sites such as Watts Up With That which go something like this (this is an actual post):
stupidity, arrogance and ignorant nature of human being is destroying the planet and its environment. its a shame for this current civilization!
Yet the people who post such things are using computers, most likely driving cars, consuming things, just like all of us do. They don't see themselves as part of their perceived problem, and don't see why they should change their lifestyles.
They may justify their use of the oil infrastructure by saying things like "I use the computers at the public library" or "I use public transportation" or "I have solar panels".
All of these excuses miss the point, which is that reducing emissions a few percent won't make a bit of difference with respect to "global climate", and that feelgood measures like changing light bulbs are pretty meaningless.
Of course we know what many of the higher-up green leaders want, and that's a complete de-industrialization of the west, and to keep developing countries from developing. In short, a return to the Hunter/Gatherer lifestyle humans endured before the advent of civilization. They want life to be brutal and short, except for themselves, of course. You don't see any of these people leading by example.

They'll just come up with some BS that they told us so all along. They're just plain leeches.
I'm pretty sure it's possible for the guy who made that quote, or others similar to him, to use a computer, drive a car and consume things, and still be right, isn't it? Now, you didn't say they weren't right, just that they are part of the problem too, and that they don't see it. Maybe some don't but I'm sure most of them do. I'm not an activist in this field, but I don't think they are hypocrites for saying this - he did after all say human beings, which may very well include himself. If he didn't, (or anyway), then he and many other should still be allowed to use computers, drive cars and consume things in my oppinion, as long as they are trying to moderate it all, and use it to promote their cause. If they should move into the forest with no connection to the outside world, their message would reach very few, and thus the benefits of shutting down their part of the "problem" would be less than if they partook a bit and rather tried to spread an awareness of the issue.
You probably vented and generalized. I agree with you at some points, but do hope there are "green activists" who live what they believe. Although, I share your questions to leaders of these parties who want to reduce the comforts and population for "mother earth" as they like to call it, they just don't want to start with themselves.
Good blog here. I enjoyed reading several of your posts.
Hi Tommy,
My post was mainly speaking to whether they believe they are right or not. And if they do, then they should do all they can to reduce their "footprint", not merely what's convenient for them to do. After all, the only meaningful way to reduce human industrial CO2 output is to stop all such industrial activity immediately. Some Green leaders want this, at least that's what they've said in the past. They really DON'T want it because it would mean the end of the civilization they depend on.
I think the message is out, can't imagine how much more it can be pounded into people's heads. So that premise really doesn't fly with me (not that I matter or anything ;)).
The problem with "I don't have to give up anything because I'm promoting my cause" premise is that it creates an elitist class of those who don't have to practice what they preach. More haves and have nots.
I'm sure there are some who live what they believe, but is it practical for most people to do this? You can spend most of every day preparing vegetable oil for car fuel, tending your organic garden, milking your own cows and goats, but where do you earn money to support your family?
